What is Voypi

Voypi is a smartphone app that allows you to make free calls and send free text messages to your friends, anywhere in the world. Voypi works just like your phone. You don’t have to create and share a special user name or change anything in the way you call and text your friends. And best of all, it’s completely free.

How we do it

Voypi uses the data link (3G or WiFi) on your smartphone so it doesn’t matter what carrier you’re with or where you live – calling or texting other Voypi contacts is free. The quality is great, it’s very easy to use and to invite other people to Voypi.

Why we do it

We are a group of friends who felt we should be able to talk and text each other as much as we want, anytime, anywhere, absolutely free. So we came up with Voypi, a Smartphone application to do just that…

What is Voypi?
Voypi is a smartphone app that allows you to make free international and local calls and send free text messages to your friends.
Why do you ask for my phone number as part of registration?
With Voypi, you don't need to create a unique user name and then share it with your friends – your phone number is your unique identifier. This way, Voypi can identify you as a contact on your friends' devices and can connect between you.
Do I need a PhD in Math (or the patience of an elephant) to use Voypi?
Nope (especially the elephant part). Download Voypi from your app store. Open it, go to your contact list and see who else has Voypi. Call or text them for free. Invite others to join. It's that simple.
Who is Voypi for?
Anyone with an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch & Android 2.2 or higher device (BlackBerry coming soon). You also need a data plan with your provider or a WiFi connection to use Voypi.
How do I use it with an iPod touch or iPad?
Voypi works great with iPods and iPads. As part of the download process, register using your cell phone number. You will then get a code number by phone or text. Please insert the code into your iPad or iPod. Now you will be able to make and receive Voypi calls and texts from friends on your iPod or iPad.
Do I need to import my contacts to Voypi?
No. Voypi uses your existing address book with one difference - you'll see a tiny Voypi icon next to your friends who also have Voypi. You can call or text them for free, just like you do from your phone.
I don't see many friends who have Voypi in my contacts - what now?
Send them an invitation. Best is to call or email, let them know you're inviting them to Voypi and that once they download the app, you can talk and text for free. The more of your friends use Voypi, the more you (and they) can talk and text for free. Like that ancient law of the Universe - you get what you give.
How do I use push notification on my iPhone?
When downloading Voypi to your iPhone, you'll get a message requesting you to approve push notifications. Push notifications allow us to notify you of incoming calls and texts even if Voypi is off or in the background. So please click 'OK'. If you already installed voypi and push notifications is disabled, please do the following:
- Go to your iPhone home screen
- Go to settings
- Tap on notifications and choose Voypi notifications
- Turn on the 3 options you see
I don't have a data plan. Can I still use Voypi?
Yes - you'll need access to a WiFi connection.
My friend installed Voypi - why can't I call or text her?
It's probably because her phone number in your contact list is not saved with the full international format. For example if your friend lives in the UK, her phone number should start with +44; if she lives in the US +1 etc.
What happens if I'm not available
Don't worry; we'll let you know if anyone was looking for you while you were gone…
What does it cost? (hint: nothing)
Voypi is 100% free. It works through your device's Wi-Fi or 3G connection and uses the same data plan that you already use. Carrier data charges may apply.
What about ads?
No ads. No tricks. No use of private information. We don't like when others do it to us. We wouldn't do it to you.
Will my phone bills be lower?
If you're paying for calls/minutes, text messages or international calls – yes. Absolutely yes…
What if one of my contacts uses Voypi but is not online?
Voypi will reactivate and your contact will be online immediately to take your call.
I changed my phone number - what should I do?
Delete Voypi, re-install it and register with your new phone number. Welcome back and enjoy!
What about privacy?
We will not use your personal information. You can read more about it in our privacy policy.
Can I use Voypi when roaming internationally?
If you have an international data roaming plan from your provider, you can use Voypi as part of that. Better still – use WiFi. These international data plans could be expensive.
I can call out, but can't receive calls.
If you have an IPhone, please make sure "Notifications" is turned on (go to Settings=> Notifications) and that Voypi appears in the notifications list. If "Notifications" is on, but Voypi is not on the list, please re-install Voypi. If you have an Android device running Android 2.2 and up, please try to re-installing Voypi. If that doesn't work, please contact support. If you have an Android device running Android 2.1 you will be able to make, but won't be able to receive calls (because your phone's operating system does not work with push notifications).
I don't see the Voypi icon next to a friend who downloaded the app.
Please make sure your friend registered to Voypi and that the number they registered with is the phone number you have on your contact list. Please confirm your friend's phone number is in the following format +country code, area code, phone, number (no 0; for example +12121234567 for a friend in NY, USA). Go to the Voypi tab and press sync (IPhone upper right corner android press menu and sync). If the following did not help please email us your phone number and the number you are trying to call and we will try to fix it.
I cannot call or send SMS to a Voypi friend.
Please make sure your friend has voypi installed on their device. Please make sure you and your friend have access to a data connection (WiFi or 3G) at the time of the call.
I did not get an activation code.
If you did not get a text with the code, please press the "no code" button on the upper left corner (or if you are using android on the same screen). Please make sure the number you entered is correct and that it's in the following format: +country code area code phone number (no 0; for example +12121234567 for a friend in NY, USA). Press "send code by sms" and the sms will be sent to you. If you still did not receive it or your phone package does not include SMS press "get code by call". You will get a phone call from 000000xxxx. Do not answer the call - your code is the last 4 digits of the call you received (xxxx). If you still did not get the code please email us with the phone number you registered with
When making a call only one of us hears the other.
Please contact our support with the following information: the number you registered with, type of device you have, operating system version and we will do our best to resolve the issue.

The Way Voypi Uses Information:

If you submit personally identifiable information to us through the Voypi Sites, Voypi Software or Voypi Services, then we use your personal information to operate, maintain, and provide to you the features and functionality of the Voypi Sites, Voypi Software and Voypi Services.

Any personal information or status content that you voluntarily disclose becomes publicly available and can be collected and used by others. Your name (as it is saved in other people’s Address Book) is displayed to other Users when you update your status messages through the Voypi Services or Voypi Software and other Users can contact you through your preferred communication method. Any status content that you submit to the Voypi Sites may be redistributed through the internet and other media channels, and may be viewed by the general public.

We do not use your phone number or email address or other personally identifiable information to send commercial or marketing messages without your consent or except as part of a specific program or feature for which you will have the ability to opt-in or opt-out. We may, however, use your email address without further consent for non-marketing or administrative purposes (such as notifying you of major Voypi Site or Voypi Service changes or for customer service purpose.

We use both your personally identifiable information and certain non-personally-identifiable information (such as anonymous User usage data, cookies, IP addresses, browser type, click stream data, etc.) to improve the quality and design of the Voypi Sites, Voypi Software and Voypi Service and to create new features, promotions, functionality, and services by storing, tracking, and analyzing User preferences and trends.
